I’m going to trust the opinion of these lilac buds that spring is in mid arrival and winter is done.
And as long as we don’t have some freakishly bitter snowstorm, these little white blooms promise to become pears.
But this treeling is more skeptical and has put out only one brave blossom. I hope it becomes a luscious peach.
Feeling very nostalgic today for the Lighthouse retreat in Grand Lake.
Colorado winters suck most of the color out of the environment, but beauty appears in textures, like these ripples of gray and brown in the burl of a huge stump on the old farm where my husband and I get firewood.
I didn’t know electric meters could explode, but this was the scene on our deck after ours did:
We were fortunate—firefighters arrived in minutes with some very cool heat-scanning equipment to find out if we had any lingering flames behind the wall, and the really fine guy from the power company worked tirelessly to get our power back on as the freezing sleet turned into the first snow of the year. Way to start the season with a bang…

In a few days, I’ll begin teaching a new writer’s workshop (this one: Intro to the Writer’s Workshop @ Lighthouse Writers Workshop), so I’m gathering a few quotes from some of my old favorites about craft and about the life.
It’s reminding me of how far I’ve come and how much I love the gloriously difficult life of being a writer. The territory is verdant and sustaining, but it’s also riddled with sinkholes and prone to flash floods; it’s not for people seeking some placid imagined stereotype or the dreamy simplicity of the occasional success story. It’s really more for adventurous spirits who can withstand the rugged landscape and significant swings in the weather, who can tackle a steep climb and stay out in the elements when it rains glitter for a few minutes before the cold moves in and the sky swirls with darkness. Many of my most well-lit moments have been those spent in the company of other writers, and many of those times have been in workshops where I learned and drew strength and courage and inspiration from my fellow workshoppers. I have such a valuable backlog of experiences and resources to draw from in building this course, and I’m thrilled at the chance to give to these new writers some of the wealth that’s been given to me.
Over the weekend, we went to the mountains for my birthday. Here’s one of my presents.
Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you believe that you too can become great. ~ Mark Twain
